JEPPE ROWING RECOGNISED
The Jeppe 1st 8 crew competed at the South African Schools Boat Race on the Kowie River in the Eastern Cape during the December break. This race is in some cases regarded as the most coveted prize in the Rowing calendar. It takes place over a 6.4km course on the Kowie River. Jeppe came 4th overall and received the trophy for the Most Improved Crew. Well done to all the rowers for their hard work and dedication.
JEPPE SAILORS PERFORM OUTSTANDINGLY
During the month of December 2011 Jeppe Boys made us proud with their fine sailing achievements.
Firstly, Marcello Marcia Gr. 9 participated in the Volvo Optimist Team Racing Regatta in Cape Town. He sailed with 3 other team mates from Gauteng for Team Telefonika. They ended up second in the regatta and narrowly missed out on competing in Denmark in the Volva Optimist Team Racing World Championships in March 2012. A week later the South African Youth Nationals started in Hermanus where approximately 350 sailors competed for National Titles in various classes and disciplines. Marcello sailed in the Laser 4.7 fleet and won convincingly. He won 11 out of 15 races and lead second place, Ruben Heard from Richards Bay, by 20 points. Stefano Marcia sailed in the Laser Radial fleet and also won hands down. He won 13 out of 15 races. Stefano was also crowned sailor of the year by SA Sailing Magazine for his achievements at SA Youth Nationals 2010, All African Games 2011 in Maputu and Volvo ISAF World Championships 2011, which was held in Zadar, Croatia. The interview can be read below.
Nico Marcia (Class of 2009), Stefano and Marcello will be competing in the Rolex Miami Cup 2012 from 22 to 27 January 2012 in Biscayne Bay, Miami. Nico and Marcello will be crew on matching racing boats and Stefano will be competing in the Laser fleet. Most of the sailors competing at this event has already qualified for London 2012. Racing can be followed live via tracking devices on the following site: Rolex Miami OCR 2012.
Stefano Marcia - Sailor of the year 2011 Interview
Stefano Marcia is SAILING’s ‘Sailor of the Year’ for 2011. He was the magazine’s Sailor of the Month in February and September for his performances on a Laser in the BT Games SAS Youth National Championships at Aeolians Club on the Vaal Dam, where he won 13 out of 15 races, and the ISAF Youth World Championships in Zadar, Croatia, where he finished sixth.
I chatted to Stefano about his sailing so far, his goals and his role models. At just 18, he is obviously very focused and has very high standards. He should have a great future in the sport.
SAILING: How and when did you start sailing?
Stefano: My dad got me started in 2004. The first boat I sailed was a Mirror, then I started sailing Oppies and I moved up from there.
SAILING: What have been the high points so far?
Stefano: The biggest has been going to the Youth Worlds for the last two years. In my earlier years I wouldn’t have been as focussed as I’ve been for the Youth Worlds. I also gave myself a big surprise at how I could perform internationally in the Laser.
SAILING: What do you sail apart from Lasers and what have the results been like?
Stefano: I sailed J22s at (DAC) Keelboat Week this year. We were first J22 and fourth overall. At the Hunter Nationals we came fifth and then were second or third at the Sprog Highvelds.
SAILING: Do you do anything apart from steering?
Stefano: A bit of mainsail trim on the J22 and I’ve done bow. I don’t really mind what I do on the boat.
SAILING: What are your sailing goals?
Stefano: The short-term goal is to become the best Laser sailor in South Africa and to try and broaden my tactics and skills on other boats as well. In 2013, the plan is to compete on the European Laser circuit and then finish in the top five at the 2014 ISAF Worlds in Spain. The big goal is to qualify for the 2016 Olympics and medal there. I’ll finish school at the end of 2012 and, outside sailing, I’d like to get a Law degree. That will probably happen after 2016 though.
SAILING: How many times do you sail a week at the moment?
Stefano: Usually four to six times. I do okay at school.
SAILING: Tell me about the coaching you’re doing in Cape Town.
Stefano: The top 30 or so Oppie sailors in the country will be doing team racing as part of the Volvo Ocean Race (VOR) Academy. They’ve been assigned to represent different VOR teams and I’m involved with coaching them. They’ll go through to knockouts and then the finals.
SAILING: Any other coaching?
Stefano: I’ve been coaching my younger brother and a friend, Simon Jones, on the Laser. They’ll be doing their first Junior Nationals this year – we’ll know pretty soon if the coaching worked.
SAILING: What are the things you admire in other people?
Stefano: I look up to people who are focussed and dedicated to what they do. I’m impressed when they are really disciplined
JEPPE MEMORIAL HALL
During the December break, the roof of the Memorial Hall collapsed. Investigations are underway and the construction / clean-up operations have begun. We expect the hall to be fully operational again by the end of the second term.
