Claus Kaminsky added to his collection of South African junior water polo caps when he played in the EU Nations Junior Championships in the Czech Republic recently.
The South African under-17 team went, and ended up winning the silver medals. The EU Nations tournament is for second-tier European countries and South Africa competes there by virtue of its trade relations with the European Union.
Claus first represented the country last year when he was in the national under-16 team that played in the Pan-Pacific tournament in Australia.
The South African team beat Finland 18-5, Sweden 21-5 Wales 31-3 and drew 11-all with Belrarus, which saw them top their pool and advance into the final. They lost to Moldovia 11-8. Claus played in all the matches and scored nine goals.
Being selected for the team means that it has been a long season for Claus and he is looking forward to break from water polo for a few months.
“There is a winter league starting up and I might play there, once a week, to keep fit, but other than that I am going to use the time to catch up the school work that I’ve missed and study for the midyear exams,” he said.
After that, its preparation for the new season which begins in October. “We are going to be a young side next season, but our juniors have been doing well and I’m looking forward to it,” Claus said.
