As was the case with so many areas of school life , 2020 was a big disappointment for the Jeppe Pipe Band.
The pipe band is one of the busiest extra-curricular activities at the school and at this time of the year they would usually be fully booked, performing at fairs and end-of-year functions, in addition to their full schedule of interschool competitions and the ceremonial duties they perform at the school.
“It’s been particularly hard on the matrics in the band,” Mr Ross Olive, the master in charge, said. “This was supposed the be their big year, but it never happened.”This was the major reason why it was decided to go ahead with the tradition of the Geddes Cup but, this year, turning it into an awards evening only because the competition aspect could not be staged.
“We wanted to honour the matrics who were leaving us, many of them after five years of service,” Mr Olive said, “and we did the announcement of the new band leadership at the same time.”
There were three announcements made. Sebastian Cruz was named the most improved band member; Jude Hide will be the Leading Tip for the second year in a row and Michael Theron was named the Pipe Major and the Band Captain for 2021.
“We are back to live practicing and it’s been great to get everyone together again,” Mr Olive said. “We are preparing for next year assuming that the gatherings, parades and performances will go ahead. We have new management in our Patrons Association and they are raring to go. With their amazing support and under our new band leaders, we are looking forward to a great 2021.”
