The mechanism and working parts of our old Steck grand piano have now been repaired and restored; it is once again in a playable condition. This has been paid for mainly by the generosity of the Spargo Trust and Mr Derek Cooper.
We did not spend money on having the case work restored: it is, after all, an old instrument with a history of hard use and some abuse; however, there are people who feel that we ought to do something about its appearance, and so the appeal continues. Others prefer it to look what it is – an old, school piano.
It is however advisable that we construct a wheel-base to support it when being moved, as its legs and castors are not designed for anything but minor adjustments of position in a very even floor. Jeppe has few even floors. We would like to have a new protective cover made for it as well.
Some sort of recital or concert to welcome the instrument back into use in the school would be good. Anyone with ideas should please contact us.
Comments and feedback on any of these matters are welcome.

In the December 1951 magazine we read as follows: "The Produce Section of the Parents' Association gave the school a magnificent grand piano at a concert held in the School hall on November 2. This piano will eventually be housed in the Memorial Hall..."

We still have this piano, but it is in a sad state. In 2003 Lincoln Bros. quoted me R18,810 (including VAT) to completely restore the old instrument. The school did not have the money at the time, and so the matter was put on hold. Meanwhile the instrument continues to deteriorate. We desperately need to get it seen to before this valuable old asset and piece of our history disintegrates completely.
Replacement cost of an equivalent instrument would be in excess of half a million rands.
May we launch a restoration appeal. Is there anyone out there willing to assist?
