A MIDSUMMER NIGHT’S DREAM
A Jeppe Boys Production
AUGUST 13 – 16 @ 19:30
TICKETS R30 per person
There have been times when rehearsals for Shakespeare’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream have felt like A Midwinter’s Nightmare but, in spite of the cold, the cast – drawn from Jeppe Boys and Girls Schools - is getting to grips with one of the most accessible and delightful comedies in English theatre. In fact A MSND is playing to packed houses in both Stratford Upon Avon and The Globe in London this season – testimony to its enduring appeal to contemporary audiences. The Jeppe High School production promises to be full of humour and fantasy and is directed and choreographed by Ed and Starr Worster who produced last year’s highly entertaining Scapino!
A Midsummer Night’s Dream: Hermia loves Lysander and Helena loves Demetrius – but Demetrius is supposed to be marrying Hermia. When the Duke of Athens tries to enforce the marriage, the lovers take refuge in the woods outside the city, and walk into the midst of a dispute between Oberon and Titania, king and queen of the fairies. And they are not alone. So, too, does a group of amateur actors who are rehearsing a play. Between the angry fairies, the bumbling players and the dazed lovers, flies Puck, armed with a love juice capable of making anyone fall for the first person they set eyes upon – no matter how unsuitable.
From the harsh Draconian court of Athens to the wild freedom of the woods, the characters fight to establish who they are. Sexuality, identity and trust are explored in a world where nothing is quite what it seems and where the boundaries of reality are blurred in magic and fantasy.
