The sporting year is not quite over for a number of Jeppe boys.
We will have cricketers playing for Central Gauteng Lions teams in interprovincial weeks in the various age groups during the holidays, and water polo players in action at the SA Schools Championships in East London.
There are also two basketball players who will be playing for the Gauteng under-18 team at the National Schools Summer Games at Wits University next week.
They are Peter Blackman, the current captain of the first team, and Jaron van Staden, who is matric and will be leaving us at the end of the year.
They both went through four rounds of trials before the team, which was chosen form the entire Gauteng province including Pretoria, the West Rand and the East Rand.
Peter has led the Jeppe 1st team to much success in the second half of the year. They came second in the two major tournaments they played in and only lost three times in the fourth term season. He is excited about the provincial tournament and the year ahead.
“We have a good team, with quite a lot of experience and a good coach, I think it’s going to be a good year for us,” he said.
This will be Jaron’s second time at the interprovincial tournament. He will be looking back on five years of basketball at Jeppe with fondness. “I was intending to play water polo when I arrived here, but some friends persuaded me to try basketball with them. It was a good decision. I can say now that basketball at Jeppe taught me many good life lessons.”
Jaron is not quite sure what he will be doing next year. “It’s going to depend on my matric results, I guess. I have offers of basketball scholarships from more than one university, so we’ll wait and see,” he said.
