Provincial colours for baseball three

Jaryd White, Byrone Oakes and Mitchell Van Niekerk

Three Jeppe boys, Jaryd White, Byrone Oakes and Mitchell Van Niekerk have been included in the Gauteng under-18 baseball team that will be playing in an inter-provincial tournament in Durban later in the year.

The three all play for the Edenvale Giants club and, in the nature of the sport, all three have family connections with baseball, and with the club.

But, if it was because of fathers, uncles and brothers that they first got involved, it’s a love of the game that keeps them going now, and inspires them to put in five days a week, practicing and playing games, and which has led them reaching a level of excellence which saw the get provincial colours.

“It’s pretty much a full-time activity now,” said Mitchell. “I don’t have much time for anything else except baseball and schoolwork.

Jaryd and Byrone are involved in other sporting activities at the school – Jaryd plays cricket and Byrone squash – and they hope to continue doing so, but the demands of baseball are heavy, they say.

“Baseball is a fun game,” Jaryd said, “and it’s a way of life for us really. “We are glad that the school is allowing us to do what we love, and is recognising our achievements.”
