Three members of the Jeppe Elite Athletics squad have qualified to run for Gauteng at the SA Schools Athletics Championships in Durban at the end of the month.
Two of them won their events in new record times.
Ntuthuko Ndimande was 1st in the under-17 800m in a time of 1:52.39, which is a new championship record. He will run in the event in Durban and, a few weeks later, at the SA Junior championships in Pretoria.
Ntuthuko is concentrating on the 800m this year because he is hoping to represent the country at the World Youth Championships later on in the year. His times indicate that he has a good chance of doing so.
Mzwakhe Mashaba won the 3 000m at the Gauteng Championships in a new record time of 9:07.88. It will be his first time at the SA Schools Champs, although he ran in the SA Schools cross-country championships when he was in primary school.
He came 3rd in the 1500m and will run for the province over that distance as well.
The third boy to be selected for Gauteng is Lesedi Moloto. He came second in the under-15 long jump at the Gauteng Championship, which qualified him for the nationals. It’s his 1st selection for Gauteng. He was in the North West province primary schools team last year.
