Rico Blom and Tsepo Stafa were included in the All Stars team named at the end of the under-14 Action Cricket interprovincial tournament played in Sandton during the holidays.
The all Stars are selected on the basis of combined playing statistics at the tournament, which means that Rico and Tsepo were among the top 10 all-rounders in action.
They played for the Eastern Gauteng at the tournament – they participate in league matches at the Benoni Action Cricket Arena, and Rico’s dad, Reynold, was the coach of the team. They were joined by three other Jeppe boys in the side. They were: Tristin Smith-Harding, who was the captain, Daniel Goosen and Sven Clausen.
They made it to the final of the tournament where they lost to Central Gauteng, winning the silver medals.
“We are all friends at Jeppe and we all play for the school’s under-14A team, so we all play Action Cricket at Benoni as well,” Rico said. “The season begins once the outdoor season ends, so it’s great to be able to continue playing cricket after we stop at school.”
Tsepo prefers the indoor game. “It’s a lot more fun,” he says, “you are involved all the time, everyone bats and everyone bowls, which is great.”
For Rico, the outdoor game is more enjoyable. “Action Cricket is very intense. The game is short and the crowd is right on top of you. I’m a batsman and I prefer outdoor where you pick your shots and can aim for the boundary. In indoor every shot goes the same distance – into the net.”
