Jeppe’s 1st hockey team, as well as the under-14A and B teams, were all in action over the Easter long weekend and they all did very well.
The first team played at the King Edward festival and won all three games that they managed to complete. The weekend was marred by bad weather and two matches – against DHS and Queens College – cancelled. They did beat Eldoraigne 7-0, Kearsney 8-0 and Dale 4-0. That’s 19 goals for and none against.
Even more importantly, said Jeppe’s master in charge of hockey Mr Bryan Hillock, who was the manager of the team at the festival, they never received a single card and their discipline was exemplary. “That’s exactly what we were aiming for and it’s important ahead of some big games that lie ahead,” he said. “We have Pretoria Boys’ High this weekend, then it’s King Edward, St David’s and the Aitken/Boden tournaments.”
The under-14A team played in the Founder’s festival, hosted by Parktown Boys’ High and were unbeaten there. They beat Kearsney 8-0, Rondebosch 4-0 and Pearson 5-0. They drew with Paul Roos 2-2 and Northwood 1-1. Their game against SACS was rained off.
The under-14Bs played in a B team tournament at Northwood Boys’ High, They lost 1-0 to SACS, then went on to beat Maritzburg College 1-0, Clifton 1-0 and Northwood 2-1 and drew 1-all with the Invitation side.
“We were thrilled with the performance of our under-14s against some of the top schools in the country,” Mr Hillock said. “The future of Jeppe hockey looks bright.”
Looking ahead, Hillock sees this weekend clash’s against Pretoria Boys’ High as a big challenge. They always have good teamsa, so it will be a good test of our strength ahead of the big games coming up.”
