Justin Kalamer knew when he let the discus go in the athletics meeting against Parktown and Pretoria Boys’ High last weekend that it was a pretty good throw, but he had no clue that he had smashed one of the oldest records in the Jeppe athletics record book – the 1995 u-15 discus record of Russel Young.
His distance was 45.43cm, which passed the old mark by 59cm, and feels he has it in him to go further.
“I have been working on my technique and have been improving my distance every time out, so I’m hoping for more, especially at the interhigh in two weeks’ time,” he said.
Justin is a local boy, he went to primary school in Edenvale where one of the coaches there saw his potential and encouraged him to take up the sport. “I was always looking for heavy things throw around and I guess someone spotted that,” he said. “Things have gone well his year, I haven’t been beaten yet and I hope it continues.”
Justin is a big boy for his age and was one of the stars in the under-15A rugby team this year. He loves that game too. “It’s great being part of a team and I really enjoyed this year with the under-15s,” he said. “But it’s athletics for now and we are giving it a full go for the interhigh.”
