Hockey boys shine at interprovincial tournaments

Joshua Van den Berg captained the Southern Gauteng under-16A team to the gold medals

The Jeppe hockey players who represented Southern Gauteng at interprovincial tournaments during the holidays did the school proud.

A number of them were included in the national high performance squads that were named and two of them captained teams that won their tournaments.

Jeppe supplied four of the captains of South Gauteng teams. Jordan Ramos was captain of the under-18A team; Dillan Kirkland captained the under-18B team; Joshua Van den Berg led the under-16A team and Jayden Brooker, who is at Jeppe Prep, was captain of the under-13 team. The Southern Gauteng under-16s and under-13s won their tournaments.

The under-18As came fourth in their IPT. They lost in the semi-finals in a one-on-one shootout and then went down in the 3rd place playoff, also in a shootout. Sibusiso Madlala made the under-18 HP squad, with Ryan Mann and Calin Hannie making the under-17A squad.

The under-16A team won the interprovincial title for the first time in many years. There were seven Jeppe boys in the team, captained by Joshua Van den Berg. The others were: Rowan Wales, Ross Breytenbach, Nathan Grose, Marco Gentle and Hayden Bartlett. Wales, Breytenbach, Grose and Bartlett were named in the SA under-16A high performance squad.

The Southern Gauteng under-16B team, captained by Jeppe’s Liam de Gouveia, came fifth in the A section of the tournament.

The primary school under-13 team, coached by Jeppe’s MIC Mr Bryan Hillock, won their tournament, which was a great achievement seeing that local primary schools only play hockey for one month before the IPT, while some other provinces have full primary schools hockey seasons.
