Hopewell Nkosi will be going to the SA Schools cross-country championships for the second year in a row later this month.
He ran in the Gauteng Championships last weekend and finished third, with the top six qualifying. “There was a sprint finish between three of us, with less that a second between us at the end, so anyone could have won,” he said. “I ran with the winner most of the way, and then the other guy caught up to us right at the end.”
Hopewell finished in the top three in all the inter school meetings this year and he says cross country is his favourite format. He does, however, also enjoy running for the school in the inter school athletics meetings that are on at the moment.
“I run 400m, 800m and 1500m, and the 3000m, when there is one. Mzwake Mashaba is also under-16 like me and he wins the 1500m, but I have won quite a few 800m races on the track so far,” he said.
He believes running on the track is good for his cross-country, and that he is good for the athletics team as well. “My training for cross-country helps my track running and I enjoy being part of the team at school meetings,” he said. “It’s been beneficial for both of us.”
We will be holding thumbs for good performances from at the interhigh on September 15th, and at the SA Champs, one week later.
