The family of Jeppe schools – Jeppe High School for Boys, Jeppe High School for Girls and Jeppe High Preparatory School – celebrated Freedom Day at a joint assembly at the boys school on Thursday.
It was a colourful occasion, with girls in traditional attire dancing, the combined schools marimba band performing, and Nandi Zulu providing a stirring rendition of the Vicky Sampson classic, My African Dream.
There were speeches by Jeppe boy, Thando Masekeo and Gauteng MEC for Education, Mr Panyaza Lesufi, with the keynote address by education activist Ms Lovelyn Nwadeyi.
She said at the outset of her speech that she was not going to soft soap anything and she said some things that may have left some uncomfortable, but which definitely made everyone think deeply about their place and role in South Africa.
It was a moving day, one that will be remembered by all who were there, and a significant date in the histories of the three schools.
