Jeppe’s cricket is on track

Jeppe High School for Boys ended their cricket season on a high note with an emphatic. 288-run win over St Alban’s College in their last fixture.

The victory was their 16th in a season stretching back to the beginning of the fourth term last year. They played 19 matches in that time and lost just one, a last ball defeat at the hands of St Stithians in the Johnny Waite semifinals two weeks ago. Two games were abandoned without results due to rain.

Seven first team players were included in Central Gauteng Lions provincial teams that played in interprovincial weeks during the December holidays, including. Linda Ndlovu and Kgaudise Molefe who were in the under-19A team.

Kgaudise went on the be selected for the South African Schools and under-19 teams.

Matthew Van Dyk made the under-19B team, while Levert Manje and Nhlanhla Mashigo were in the under-17A team and Braydon Hicks and Breidyn Schaper in the under-17B team.

Kagudise topped the bowling statistics for the season, taking 15 wickets at an average of 9,4, He was followed by Cian Robertson, who took 17 sticks at an average of 10,6.

The top batsman was Breidyn Schaper, who accumulated 244 runs at an average of 61, followed by the captain, Linda Ndlovu, who made 247 runs at an average of 41,2.

Levert Manje got his first century of the season in that final game against St Alban’s on Saturday. He had posted several 80s and 90s earlier on but could never get to three figures. Jeppe accumulated a massive 356-4, with Brayden Hicks (65) and Dylan Nicholas (63) also contributing valuable runs. In reply, St Alban’s were bowled out for just 68, with Zach Sibanda taking 3/5 and Shaveer Khan 3/16.

Jeppe’s director of cricket, Mr Mike Bechet, said that he is happy with the progress that the team has made. “The boys showed character and pulled off some good wins,” he said. “More importantly, we are rebuilding a culture of cricket at Jeppe. Teams in all the age groups have done well and we have increased the number of teams we fielded, with every team paying at least one game every week.

“It’s all about putting the proper processes in place and I believe we are getting there.”
