Muzi Manyike is Jeppe’s latest national representative.
He has been included in the SA under-17 seven-a-side rugby squad that will play in an international schools section that runs alongside the Assupol International Sevens in Cape Town – a World Rugby Sevens warmup tournament.
Muzi has also been included in the SA Rugby under-18 High Performance programme and was on a training camp there when the news about his Sevens selection came through.
He recently played for the Golden Lions at the national under-17 Sevens week, and helped them to third place overall, that after being part of the Golden Lions under-18 team that won the main game at the Coca-Cola Craven Week in July.
It’s been a full rugby year for him. It started last year this time with pre-season training at Jeppe and carried on through the schools season into the Craven Week and only ended at the Sevens last week.
Not that it’s completely over. Pre-season preparation is on the go at Jeppe and he’s part of that now.
“It’s been long and hard,” he says, “but I really don’t mind. We battled initially in school games because we were young and inexperienced, but we got better and every one is excited about next year now. We keep more or less the same team and that’s going to make a difference next year.”
And Muzi Manyike’s experience of playing in green and gold is going to add a lot of value to the 2018 team.
