New Director of Rowing appointed

The school is thrilled to announce that Mr Simon Moore has been appointed Jeppe’s new Director of Rowing.

Mr Moore has had an impressive career in rowing which includes five years of competing for St Stithians while he was at school there, rowing and coaching at University and club level and coaching back at Saints, his alma mater. He also spent a year at Rowing South Africa where he was the administrator of their international rowing programme.

“After leaving school I went to UCT to study and rowed for the 1st team there,” he said. “Then I went to Rhodes University where I rowed and coached and then came back to Joburg where I competed and coached at Old Eds. Since 2016 I have been coaching at St Stithians.”

Mr Moore has decided that it’s time to commit himself more fully to schools rowing and he is delighted to be getting the opportunity to do that at Jeppe.

“It’s my intention to add a teaching diploma to my other university qualifications and to go into teaching and coaching as a full time career,” he said.

“I’m excited at the prospect of being in overall charge of a rowing programme and Jeppe is going to be a great place to do that. The way that Jeppe performed at the SA Schools Championships this year, and at the Gauteng Champs at the end of last year, giving the better-resourced private schools a serious run for their money, speaks volumes for the quality of the rowing programme and the heart and determination of the boys. I am looking forward to working with them.”

Covid-19 has meant that he will have to wait a while before he can start doing that, however, and it seems at this stage that he will only be starting in earnest at the beginning of next year.

“it’s been frustrating of course,” Mr Moore said, “but I have been using the time to do what I can in terms of planning and getting procedures in place so that we can hit the road running when we are allowed back on the water again.”

Welcome to Jeppe Mr Moore, our rowing club has become one of the school’s high achieving activities and we are looking forward to seeing you build on that.
