The Memorial Hall at Jeppe High School for Boys was packed on Saturday night for the Jeppe Pipe Band 75th Anniversary Quartets and Drum Salutes evening.
The pipe band actually turned 75 in 2018, but the trip to the Basel Tattoo was the major focus of the year, so this event was held over to this year.
It was a sit-down dinner evening, with the musical items serving as entertainment and the format was a huge success. 18 pipe quartets and four drum sections from around the country entered. The entire compliment of the Jeppe pipe band – 35 musicians – participated.
The senior competition was won by Benoni High School, and the juniors by St Benedict’s.
“It was something new, and it certainly worked,” said Jeppe’s master in charge, Mr Damien Pitman. We sold table downstairs and seats in the gallery and it was a sell-out. The standard was incredibly high and everyone enjoyed themselves.
The evening was a celebration of 75 years of the pipe band at Jeppe, and it doubled up as the performance debut for Jeppe’s new set of drums. “These are our first new drums in 28 years and the pipe band parents association has been saving up for them,” Pitman said. “We are very grateful, they are going to take the band to a new level.”
The pipe band will be at Pretoria Boys’ High on Saturday for the last competition gathering of the term.
