The Jeppe 1st water polo team will be going into the new season better prepared than any other in recent times.
There are two weeks to go to the SACS waterpolo tournament in Cape Town – the first official games of the season – but the first team squad has been training for over a month and they have already played 18 (shortened) matches at the St John’s pre-season festival.
And they have done very well in them. When they went down 4-2 to St Stithians and 3-2 to St John’s last weekend, those were the first games they had lost so far.
More importantly, according to 1st team coach, Mr Dave Hansen, they have managed to build up some good strength in depth by selecting a 15-man squad and rotating players all the time.
“The official third term sports take precedence, of course,” he said, “so we don’t always have everyone available all the time. But that has meant other guys have had an opportunity and that has to be good for the team going forward.”
The matrics are still in action and will be going to SACS, but they will get their traditional send off soon afterwards at the KES fixture.
The new team will get a chance to prove themselves at the Saints festival soon afterwards.
