Caden Sanders was in the Central Gauteng under-17 golf team that played in a triangular interprovincial tournament against Northwest and Mpumalanga earlier this month.
The teams for these ‘small interprovincials’, he explained, are chosen from the rankings in the Central Gauteng club golf league. “I am currently ranked 12th among the under-17s and if I maintain that ranking I hope to be chosen for the main interprovincial tournament at the end of the year and get provincial colours.”
Caden plays off a plus 0,5 handicap and is based at Glenvista Golf Club. He also plays for the school golf team in the JHB school league. “We are currently in the B league and are placed in the top two and in line for the qualifying playoffs for the top league at the end of the season.”
He has been playing golf since he was six years old, he said, although he took a break for a few years when his family moved overseas. He began playing again when he came to Jeppe in grade 8 and is now in grade 11. He played hockey in his junior years but had to give it up to concentrate on golf.
“I have applied for a College scholarship in the United States for when I leave school and am hoping to become a professional golfer one day,” he said.
