Ryan Boyd’s ice hockey success story continues.
He has just come back from the interprovincial tournament in Cape Town where he was named the best goalkeeper in both the under-18 and under-20 age groups, and he is in line to make his fifth appearance for the national under-18 side.
He has played four times as starting ‘keeper for the SA under-18 team and has been backup ‘keeper for the under-20s and reserve ‘keeper for the senior mens side.
His love affair with ice hockey began when he was nine years old. “I went skating with my sister and someone at the rink asked me if I wanted to play hockey,” he recalls. “I thought, why not? I made the provincial under-18 team at the age of 12 and have played at the under-14, under-16 and under-18 provincial tournaments.”
Ryan, who plays for the Sabres club at Festival Mall, intends keeping in the game in the future.
“My next step is, hopefully, making the SA under-18 side that is going to New Zealand next year,” he said.
