Three Jeppe basketball players, Themba Tshuma, Ramarutha Rametse and Obinna Nwagbara, have been selected to represent the Johannesburg District in inter-regional tournaments this weekend.
Themba and Ramarutha are in the Johannesburg District under-18 team, while Obinna will play for the under-16s. They were selected last weekend, after attending trials at the Klipspruit Indoor Sports Centre in Soweto.
There were about 40 under-18 players and 70 under-16s, from all the basketball-playing schools in Joburg there, Obinna explained. After doing drills and playing games on Saturday the two groups were reduced to 20 players each and the process was repeated on Sunday.
“We were then cut to 12 in each age group,” Themba said. “We will be playing in a tournament against the other districts from around Gauteng next Saturday. Then a provincial team will be chosen to play in a national tournament in July.”
The plan is that national under-16 and under-18 teams will be chosen there and they will be playing in an international tournament in China later in the year.
“All of these things are dependent on what happens with the Covid pandemic, of course,” Ramarutha said. “We are just glad that we have made it this far.”
We congratulate them on this achievement and wish them well for the next stage of the process.
