Otsile Nkadimeng was awarded two badges, and a trophy, at the Speech and Drama College of South Africa Public Speaking competition last weekend.
Badges are awarded, he explained, for the standout performance in each category. Otsile earned Prestige Awards – the category above gold – in both the prepared and impromptu speeches categories, and also got the trophy for the best overall performance on the day.
“My prepared speech, called The Courage of Kind-heartedness, went down well,” he said. “It was about a new kind heroism which is not about epic deeds of courage, but rather about small deeds undertaken by individuals who take the time to see suffering and difficulty and then do something to help.”
According to Otsile, he is the first Jeppe boy to earn a badge in this competition. “It was quite big, with entries from a number of schools, and I am happy with my performance,” he said. “Now I am involved in the school’s internal Best Speakers competition, and am looking forward to a time when speaking and debating competitions against other schools can start up again.”
