Jeppe’s first water polo team is having one its best seasons in many years.
This week, the team qualified for the final of the Gauteng Schools Water Polo Top 8 competition by beating King Edward 14-3 in the semi-finals on Tuesday. Earlier in the day, they beat St Stithians, in a penalty shoot out, in their last group match.
The stage is set for an exciting final when Jeppe meet St Stithians again, at Saints, next Tuesday.
There is clearly little to choose between the two teams – Saints beat Jeppe 11-8 when the two sides met at the Pretoria Boys’ High Festival last weekend.
The Pretoria event was a good one for Jeppe. They won five out of their six games over the weekend, beating St Benedict’s 15-5; St Peter’s 9-7; KES 25-8; Hilton 12-4; and Kearsney 8-4.
Jeppe was well-represented in the various Gauteng provincial sides at the end of last year, and four players have received national call ups at under-17 level. Liam Stott is the under-17A team that will be going to the EU tournament in the Czech Republic in April, while Sebastijan Stojanovic, Rourke Templeton and Calvin Kuperus are in the under-17B team that will be playing in a CANA tournament in Durban.
The season is winding down now and after next week’s Gauteng final, the boys will be going flat out under coach, Mr Dave Hansen, determined to make a good showing at the King Edward Tournament which takes place on the weekend of March 2 to 4.
